Windows 11 Setup Guide

Out of the Box

When you first get your new computer, please turn it on and go through the initial setup of Windows.

Make sure to set the country or region to Australia and the Keyboard layout to US

Connect your laptop to your home internet – select your Wi-Fi SSID and enter the password to continue

After initial updates have completed, you can name your computer or skip this step

How would you like to set up this device?

use your eduPass account

You can choose to set up for Work or school using your school provided eduPass credentials (@schools.vic.edu.au email address and password)

If you set up for Work or school using your eduPass, you should also create a local account once Windows is ready to use and record the details (see section below)

or your Personal Microsoft account

You can set up the device for personal use if you already have a Microsoft account or are happy to create one.

Please be aware that if you create a new Microsoft account for a child it will be subject to Parental controls that may make it difficult to manage at school. 

If you choose to setup the device for personal use, please consider:
a) Recording your Microsoft Account login details so they can be easily recalled later
b) Setup MFA (Multi Factor Authentication) for your Microsoft Account to another email address or a mobile phone that can be easily accessed at school.

Finish Setup and Start Windows

Choose privacy settings and customize your experience – it’s a good idea to turn off Advertising ID

Your computer should now be ready to use

If you require any assistance, you can email or have your student come and see the IT team when they start school.

Create a local account in Windows

Type netplwiz in your search bar next to the Start button and click to ‘Run Command’

Click Add and then on the blue screen, click ‘Sign in without a Microsoft account (not recommended)’

Click Local Account & fill in the details – record these login details for later

Click Next, then click Finish

Select the new user from the list and click the Properties button

On the Group Membership tab, select Administrator and click OK
