Vision for Teaching and Learning
At Sandringham College, our vision is underpinned by a simple principle: we believe that every child can learn, and that great teaching makes it happen.
How We Teach
We believe that high-quality education supports both equity and excellence. In designing teaching and learning that is predictable, knowledge rich, carefully sequenced and explicit, all students – regardless of their background or starting point – are given the opportunity to succeed and thrive.
We ensure that supports, extension and challenge are embedded within everyday classroom practice, so that all students are consistently stretched to think deeply and achieve at their highest level.
Our approach to teaching and learning endeavours to foster life-long curiosity and confidence, and the capacity to contribute meaningfully within local and global communities.
Our practice is grounded in the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0) and the Science of Learning, with our principles of instructional design drawn from cognitive science, neuroscience and educational psychology. We strive to ensure that curriculum and pedagogy across the college is carefully structured, sequenced and delivered to maximise student attention, memory and knowledge retention. In doing so, we seek to ensure that learning is successful and durable.
Learning at Sandringham College is enabled by three core pillars:
- Consistent classroom routines to maximise attention, to reduce extraneous cognitive load and to create a safe space for learning to take place.
- Explicit instruction, which is a fast paced and highly interactive method of teaching that involves every learner, every minute.
- Knowledge rich curriculum that is coherent, challenging and carefully sequenced across the college to ensure that new knowledge can stick to old knowledge, which we know will maximise growth for every learner.
Responsive Teaching
Our pedagogical approach ensures that throughout each lesson, teachers continually check for understanding and respond to student needs in real time. This responsive teaching ensures misconceptions are addressed early and learning is appropriately scaffolded, embedded and extended for our students, minute by minute.
Curriculum for Pathways (Years 7–12)
At Sandringham College, our curriculum is designed to provide a clear, coherent and purposeful learning journey from Years 7 to 12. Grounded in the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, our programs ensure that all students build strong knowledge, develop essential skills, and are supported to pursue pathways that align with their strengths, interests and aspirations.
