Debating and public speaking
At Sandringham College, we believe that the ability to communicate with clarity, confidence and purpose is essential for success at school and beyond. Participation in debating and public speaking provides students with the opportunity to develop these critical skills in a structured, supportive and highly engaging environment.
Students are taught how to construct persuasive arguments, think critically and present ideas with confidence, while also learning to listen, respond and engage respectfully with different perspectives. The program caters for students at all levels, from those building confidence to experienced speakers seeking to refine their skills.
Students have the opportunity to represent the College in a range of external competitions, including the Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) Schools Competition, where they develop their skills in formal debating against other schools. Senior students may also participate in the prestigious Lions Youth of the Year program, which recognises excellence in public speaking, leadership and community contribution.
Through these experiences, students build their ability to think quickly, communicate effectively and work collaboratively, while developing confidence, resilience and leadership capability.
At Sandringham College, we are proud to support students to become articulate, thoughtful and confident communicators, equipped to succeed in their studies and future pathways.
